While the history of essential oils is a bit fuzzy, the first transcription of essential oil is somewhere around the 13th century by physician, pharmacist, and chemist Ibn al-Baitar. However, Egyptians were famously known for using essential oils for medicine, beauty, skincare, perfume—and also to embalm the deceased. Essential oils have also been an integral part of Ayurvedic medicine, and specific oils can help balance certain doshas.
Essential oils can be used in several different ways, from aromatherapy and massage to skin care. They are known to have healing properties that can treat certain skin conditions and restore balance to the body. It’s important to note the difference between essential oils, carrier oils, and herbal body oils.
Essential oils are typically highly concentrated and in small bottles. Most of them need to be diluted with carrier oils or water and are typically not meant to be used on their own. Body oils however are generally okay to apply directly to the skin (however, check instructions on the bottle as they may vary). But, before getting all greased up, let’s take a look at some of our favorite, affordable oils. Disclaimer: We are not dermatologists so please seek advice from a medical professional.
